Accreditation Statement
The Institute for Functional Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Purpose Statement
The purpose of this course is to help healthcare providers extend the practice of functional medicine to patients traditionally diagnosed with neurological conditions, including episodic disorders (migraine, seizures, ischemic events), chronic or progressive disorders (multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, myopathies), and more classical neurodegenerative disorders (dementia, parkinsonism, supranuclear palsy, ALS). The course does not require intensive background or experience in neurology, and will be appropriate for any practitioner who cares for patients with neurological problems. It will be particularly useful for neurologists interested in applying functional medicine in their clinical practice.
Who Should Attend?
Primary care and specialist physicians, naturopathic physicians, chiropractors, and other allied health professionals who care for patients with diagnosed neurological conditions.
Statement of Need
Attendees at IFM’s courses have consistently expressed a need to improve their understanding of the application of functional medicine to neurological disorders. As the population ages, more primary care practitioners are seeing greater numbers of patients with neurological disorders associated with aging, and are, therefore, very interested in a broader understanding of different approaches to prevention and treatment of these disorders.
Continuing Education Credit Designations
For MDs and DOs: The Institute for Functional Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 17.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits (TM). Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.
Application for CME credit has also been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending.

For PAs: AAPA accepts Category 1 credit for the PRA organizations accredited by ACCME. Contact your individual state licensing board for approved hours for your state.

For DCs: The National University of Health Sciences provides continuing education credit for chiropractic physicians. Applications have been submitted to all states for a total of 17.75 credit hours.

For NDs: Contact your state licensing board for further information.

For Nurses: Contact your state licensing board for further information.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Initiate evaluation of patients with problems traditionally considered neurological, both simple and complex;
• Apply the principles of functional medicine to both simple and complex neurological disorders, using the matrix;
• Identify appropriate utilization of laboratory testing for this patient population;
• Within the context of the functional medicine matrix, discuss the basic pathophysiology and biochemistry of the neurological disorders presented;
• Address preventive measures in patients where genetic risk for neurodegenerative disease has been identified; and
• Educate patients or clients about the appropriate utilization of functional medicine in disorders traditionally considered neurological.
