Accreditation and CME
The Institute for Functional Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME®) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The mission of the ACCME is the identification, development, and promotion of standards for quality continuing medical education (CME) utilized by physicians in their maintenance of competence and incorporation of new knowledge to improve quality medical care for patients and their communities.

"CME consists of educational activities which serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional performance and relationships a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession. The content of CME is that body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession as within basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine, and the provision of health care to the public."[ACCME]

The annual International Symposium, Neuroprotection Module, and the AFMCP course are designated for Category I credit towards the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. The 10th and 11th Symposia (2003 and 2004) also received prescribed credit from the American Academy of Family Practice for most of the credits available, and AFMCP is eligible for AAFP elective credit.
Press Release: September 12, 2006
The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) has been surveyed by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME®) and awarded the status of Accreditation with Commendation for six years as a provider of continuing medical education for physicians.

ACCME accreditation seeks to assure both physicians and the public that continuing medical education activities provided by the Institute for Functional Medicine meet the high standards of the Essential Areas, Elements and Policies for Accreditation as specified by the ACCME. The ACCME rigorously evaluates the overall continuing medical education programs of institutions according to standards adopted by all seven sponsoring organizations of the ACCME. These are: the American Board of Medical Specialties; the American Hospital Association; the American Medical Association; the Association for Hospital Medical Education; the Association of American Medical Colleges; the Council of Medical Specialty Societies: and the Federation of State Medical Boards of the U.S., Inc.

The mission of IFM is to improve patient outcomes through prevention, early assessment and comprehensive management of complex, chronic disease. The Institute trains physicians and other healthcare practitioners to identify and heal the underlying clinical imbalances of chronic disease, creating momentum toward health.

IFM offers live conferences and courses eligible for CME credit: an annual International Symposium;a six-day course, Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP); and a weekend course, Neuroprotection.
